Solar Powered Attic Fan

Solar attic fans are another integration of solar power into our lives. The most original feature of these fans are their easement. The point is that there is a need in those attic fans only when there is a very sunny day and temperatures are measured up to 140°F and profit comes out of here brighter sun shines more electricity produced and more fan is spinning and more fresh air comes inside.

Most homes have manual roof vents, which allow some air movement, but they can’t keep up with the sun pounding down all day.

A single solar attic fan can cool about 1,500 square feet (140 m2) of attic area. The fan should be installed more or less in the middle of the attic to serve the entire space. The fan will draw outside air from the eaves and from other vents.

Although equipment costs are greater for solar powered attic fans than conventional powered fans (about $200 more), the cost to bring electrical wiring to the attic to supply a conventional ventilator closes the gap on installed cost.

The AC powered fans are often big and boisterous, and require an electrician or knowledgeable homeowner to do a hardwired hookup. Costs can easily exceed US$ 600 (less expensice if you do it yourself), the more elegant solar-powered attic fan can do the job.

Using a simple, 10-watt photovoltaic module directly powering a 12-volt DC fan, these self-contained units can quietly and effectively move 800 cubic feet (23 m3) of air per minute. This is enough to cool a typical attic by 30 to 50°F (17–28°C). Solar attic fans do not rely on batteries to get the job done.

Instead, they simply operate when the sun is shining on the fan’s PV module, and effectively cool the attic during the time of the day that heat would otherwise build up. In some places, it can eliminate the need for air conditioning.

No matter how well insulated your ceiling is, excessive heat in the attic will find its way into your living space. Insulation simply slows it down. By midday, an army of millions of Btu have marched through your insulation and are assaulting your living space. Solar powered attic fan reduce the air conditioning load in the living space below, and make hot summers more endurable for those who don’t use air conditioning.

If there is inadequate attic intake air and poor sealing between the conditioned space of the home and the attic, powered attic fans can potentially draw air from the house into the attic.

Not only can this compromise energy efficiency, it can increase the risk of attic moisture problems as well as increase the risk of drawing the byproducts of combustion into the house (a process called back drafting).

Section R806.2 of the International Residential Code specifies the amount of ventilation required for attics in newly-constructed homes.

The required vent area can be reduced with installation of a ceiling vapor barrier or ventilators located in the upper portions of the space to be ventilated. The code does not require powered ventilation for attics.

There may be difficulty using solar attic fan in Dade County, Florida, and areas where building products must approved by the inspection department.

The concern in high wind zones, such as coastal Florida, is that roof penetrations of any sort provide a potential weak point in the building envelope. High winds can blow away protrusions leaving the building susceptible to damage from the rainwater that accompanies the wind.

Many manufacturers now offer solar attic fan to ventilate attics and help keep attics cooler.

Solar attic fan rely on:

  • A small (typically 10- or 20-watt) A roof-mounted solar attic fan transforms sunlight into electric power to drive a motor that spins a fan blade and removes heat and moisture from the attic.

  • Solar panel to power a DC motor when the sun is shining.

  • The fans, which exhaust air at a rate of 800 to 1200 cfm, are installed with intake vents (such as soffit and gable vents) to provide high-capacity powered ventilation without electric operating costs.

Most vents are mounted high on the roof, near the ridge, and combined with soffit or gable vents for balanced intake and exhaust air streams. Solar powered gable ventilators are also available.
