The Solar House: Passive Heating and Cooling
The Solar House
Does a book count as a solar product to review?
I wanted to let you know about the book "The Solar House: Passive Heating and Cooling" by Daniel Chiras. I bought and read it recently and must say I think it is one of the best book on the topic. I was a bit nervous that it would be dated, since it was written in 2002, but I found most of the information still very relevant. The book is a comprehensive guide to energy efficient home deisgn - not only passive solar home design, so the title isn't quite correct.
Some books that I have read on this topic are too vague; they don't really provide any help, just leave me with more questions, but The Solar House goes into details about for example all the design elements, such as direction of home, foundation designs, window ratios and so on.
There is also a good chapter about healthy air quality in relation to home design techniques.
I think this book is a valuable resource for anyone into building an energy-efficient home, regardless of it you'll build it yourself or have a contractor do the job. The only negative I can say about it is that it is from 2002. Please Daniel Chiras, write an up-dated, revised book...
(He has written several other books that are similar, for example Power from the Sun: A Practical Guide to Solar Electricity, but I still would like an updated version of the Solar House.)
